Covered Conductor MV Tree Wire

Covered Conductor MV Tree Wire

Covered conductors are overhead medium-voltage (MV) power lines, typically operating between 5 kV and 35 kV, featuring an insulating layer extruded over traditional bare aluminum stranded wire. They are specifically engineered to offer greater flexibility than bare conductors in areas where contact with trees, animals, or other objects may occur.

MV Tree Wire Construction

Conductor: Aluminum alloy 1350-H19 compacted per ASTM B400 or ACSR stranded per ASTM B232 or AAAC stranded per ASTM B399.
Conductor Shield: Semiconducting cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE).
Inner Layer: Natural low density cross-linked polyethylene (XL-LDPE).
Outer Layer: Gray or black sun resistant and track-resistant cross-linked high density polyethylene (XL-HDPE).

MV Tree Wire Application

Covered Conductor MV Tree Wire is installed in transmission line corridors with limited space or near trees and other vegetation, using a method similar to that for bare conductors. However, the wire does not carry the rated voltage level and must be used with compatible insulators, supported by crossarms or brackets.

MV Tree Wire Technical Data

  • Maximum operating voltage:
  • 5 kV to 35 kV
  • Maximum conductor operation temperatures:
  • Normal: 90 °C
  • Emergency: 130 °C
  • Short Circuit:250 °C

MV Tree Wire Standard

  • ICEA S-121-733

MV Tree Wire Feature

  • Reliability Enhancement (SAIDI): This is the greatest advantage. By preventing transient and permanent outages caused by common causes, it significantly reduces the number of customer power interruptions.
  • Reduced Tree Trimming: Utilities can substantially decrease the frequency and intensity of vegetation management programs, saving costs while improving community relations.
  • Enhanced Public Safety: Reduces the risk of arc flash fires and prevents electrocution hazards to wildlife and the public (e.g., when lines fall onto vehicles or the ground).
  • Compact Line Design: Conductors can be installed more closely together with minimal interphase contact risk, allowing for reduced pole spacing requirements.
